How do I wash silk?
Silk bedding can be washed at 30° on a delicate cycle with an enzyme-free detergent, and it should be washed separately. As silk is a delicate and lightweight material, it cannot be tumble-dried and should always be air-dried. Also remember to turn the bedding inside out and close the zipper before washing to preserve its quality.
In this guide
Silk is a delicate material that requires gentle handling both when washing and during general care. In this post, we explain how to best care for your silk pillowcase so that it stays beautiful for as long as possible.
TIP: Always turn the bedding or pillowcase inside out and close the zipper. This protects the smooth surface of the silk. We recommend using a laundry bag designed for silk.
Hand washing:
If you wash silk by hand, we recommend rinsing it thoroughly and gently dabbing it dry. We also recommend hanging it freely to dry. Avoid soaking silk, as this may cause watermarks, colour bleeding and colour transfer.
Washing machine:
If you use a washing machine, you should always choose low temperatures and a delicate cycle. Preferably avoid detergent altogether, but if it is necessary, choose a mild, enzyme-free product specifically designed for silk and delicate fabrics.
Stains:
Never rub stains on silk, as this can easily create “dusty” or dull areas in the fabric. Oil and grease stains can be particularly difficult to remove and should often be left to a professional cleaner.
Stains can be pre-treated before washing with a small amount of concentrated liquid detergent for delicate fabrics or mild washing-up liquid. However, be aware that coloured silk fabrics may be more prone to watermarks. Leave the product to work for approximately 10 minutes before washing the silk.
We recommend Tenestar detergent. Can be purchased here.
